Taskforce alarm at Empire Kosher keeps crews busy for over 2.5 hours

Monday, August 21, 2006

Initial dispatch @ 2129 - Co 2, 3, 1, 4, 5, EMS 20, Mifflin County Truck 11-1, dispatched to Empire Kosher Poultry for a fire in the electrical room, flames showing. Units arrived on scene shortly after dispatch to find fire in the "Live Room" area of the plant. Fire was around two hydraulic oil containers and both containers were on fire. Ladder 27 laddered side A of the strucure and Mifflin County Truck 11-1 laddered the D side of the building. Engine 22 and Rescue 29's crew made entry finding heavy fire on the second floor of the live room and the truck crew found fire on the roof caused from flames traveling up an exhaust vent above the fire. The fire was contained to a small area approximately 15' x 20' and after foam was applied, fire was extinguished. Unfortunately it took a while to get foam on the fire and the fire was not able to be extinguished even with the three 1 3/4" handlines pouring gallons of water on the fire. There was minimal extension of fire due to the building being made of concrete. After a walk-through of the area involved and surrounding areas, the box was cleared, all units returned available, at 0007. An AFA at the Rabbi appartments on the grounds of Empire Kosher happened right around the time units were about ready to clear the scene. Apartments were investigated, found lit candles to be at fault. Box cleared.
